Burglary Rates South Yorkshire 2026 | Don't Relax Yet

South Yorkshire Police published their annual policing figures on 14 September 2026. Residential burglary dropped 20.6% in the twelve months to March 2026. The Rotherham Advertiser picked it up the same day, and good on them. It's a real improvement. Officers worked for that number, and it shows.

But here's where I part ways with the celebratory tone.

The same report places South Yorkshire third worst in England and Wales for household burglary rate, at 10.1 break-ins per 1,000 homes. The Deputy Mayor's own report uses the phrase 'remains a priority for local communities'. That's bureaucrat-speak for: we're still nowhere near sorted.

What 10.1 per 1,000 Actually Means

People see a statistic and switch off. So let's make it local. Bawtry sits inside the Doncaster metropolitan boundary, DN10 postcode, part of the Doncaster/Rotherham corridor that South Yorkshire Police have consistently flagged as higher-risk within the force area. Austerfield, Harworth, Misson, Finningley, Blyth, these are small communities where everyone reckons they're safe because it's quiet. That's exactly the mindset burglars are counting on.

10.1 per 1,000 homes means roughly one in every hundred properties gets hit each year across the force. In a smaller community where a handful of streets make up the stock, one active team of opportunists can skew that badly in a single month. I've seen it. I had a run of calls in Rossington two winters back, five jobs in three weeks, all the same stretch of road, all the same door type, all the same entry method. Lock snapping, every one.

The Complacency Problem

A 20% drop is the kind of headline that makes people feel like the problem is sorted. It isn't. And the timing worries me, because we're heading into autumn, the season when burglary rates historically climb. Darker evenings, busier schedules, people less likely to notice a stranger on the street.

I already know what I'm going to find when the calls start coming in. Doors fitted with standard euro cylinders, no anti-snap rating, bought because they came with the uPVC frame. Cylinders protruding 3mm past the escutcheon plate because nobody measured. Deadlocks that haven't been tested in two years. Insurance certificates gathering dust in a drawer while the lock they specify stopped meeting standard the moment the last tenant moved out.

Don't be that call.

What Your Insurer Actually Requires

Most home insurance policies in the UK require final exit doors to have a lock to BS3621 or BS8621. Deadlocks, five-lever mortice locks, or a multipoint system with a cylinder to that standard. If you've got a uPVC door, which most properties in Bawtry and across the DN postcodes do, the relevant standard for the cylinder is TS007 3-star anti-snap.

A 3-star cylinder from Avocet ABS, Ultion, or Mul-T-Lock costs £35 to £80 fitted. A cylinder that's snapped off and a door forced open costs you a claim, an excess, a premium hike, and potentially a rejected payout if the lock wasn't up to standard in the first place.

That's not a hypothetical. I've spoken to homeowners after exactly that conversation with their insurer.

Two Things to Check This Week

• Cylinder protrusion. If your euro cylinder sticks out more than a few millimetres past the door furniture, a burglar can shear it with a pair of pliers and a screwdriver in under thirty seconds. Measure it. If it protrudes, it needs a new anti-snap cylinder and a proper escutcheon guard.
• Your policy schedule. Find the section on lock requirements. It'll list a standard. If your locks don't meet it, your claim is at risk before a burglar even tries your door.

Landlords in Harworth, Rossington, and Tickhill, this applies to your rental properties too. Tenancy doesn't remove your obligation to maintain locks to the standard your own insurance requires.

The Honest Verdict

I'm glad the numbers fell. I genuinely am. But South Yorkshire at 10.1 per 1,000 is not a place to ease off. The Deputy Mayor said it himself. A good year is not a safe year, and a safe-feeling village is not a secured one.
