uPVC Door Repair vs Replace Cost | Why Repair Wins Most of the Time
Replacing a uPVC door costs £800-£2,500. Servicing the gearbox and cylinder twice a decade costs under £500. The maths aren't close.
A uPVC door that won't lock properly is one of those jobs where people immediately jump to "I need a new door." Sometimes that's true. Most of the time it isn't, and the difference in cost is significant enough to be worth spelling out before you phone a window company.

What Actually Goes Wrong on a uPVC Door
The door itself, the white (or grey, or black) PVC frame, rarely fails. What fails are the moving parts inside it. Specifically:
- The multipoint locking gearbox. That's the mechanism running up the edge of the door, driven by the handle, which throws the hooks and bolts into the frame.
- The euro cylinder. The barrel you put your key into.
- The handle and spindle.
- The hinges, which drop over time and cause the door to sit out of alignment.
A door that won't deadlock, a key that's getting stiff, a handle that flops down without catching, these are almost always gearbox or cylinder problems. Not door problems.
The Cost of Repairing a uPVC Door
A gearbox replacement on a standard uPVC door costs between £130 and £220 fitted, depending on the make. Brands like Fuhr, GU, Maco, Roto, Winkhaus and Lockmaster are all common around DN10. The part itself runs £55 to £100 for a mid-range replacement unit; the rest is labour and the time to identify the correct model. Budget units come in cheaper, but on a rental in Harworth or Rossington you want a part that lasts.
A cylinder swap, say, swapping an old Yale or ERA barrel for an Ultion or Avocet ABS (TS007 3-star rated, both SS312 Diamond approved) costs £65 to £95 fitted. Do both on the same visit and you're typically looking at £200 to £270 all in, because the second job shares the call-out.
Hinge adjustment is usually £40 to £60 and often fixes a door that appears to have a lock fault but is actually just dropping.
The Cost of Replacing the Door
A like-for-like uPVC door replacement from a local window company in the Doncaster, Bawtry or Retford area currently runs £800 to £1,400 for a standard residential door, supply and fit. A composite replacement (which many homeowners are nudged toward) runs £1,500 to £2,500. That's before any decorative glazing, specific colour finishes or frame repair work.
You're also losing a day to installation, and on a rental in Harworth or Rossington, that's a maintenance day and a potential tenant complaint.
Ten-Year Cost Comparison
Assume you service the gearbox and cylinder twice over ten years, which is realistic for a busy door or a rental property. A replaced door is not maintenance-free either: a sensible owner will upgrade the cylinder at year five and may face a gearbox issue before year ten regardless. The table reflects that.

The repair route costs roughly half of a uPVC replacement and a quarter of composite, even with two full service visits and a realistic maintenance allowance on the replacement door. At the end of ten years, the repaired frame still has years left in it.
When Replacement Actually Makes Sense
I'm not saying never replace a door. There are times when it's the right call:
- The frame itself is cracked, rotted at the bottom, or has been forced and is structurally compromised after a break-in.
- The door is so old (pre-2010) that replacement cylinders and gearboxes are discontinued and sourcing parts takes weeks.
- The owner wants to upgrade to a PAS24-rated composite with a TS007 3-star cylinder as part of a genuine security overhaul.
- It's a landlord HMO property where insurance or licensing requires documented upgrades.
For most residential doors on a Martin Common semi or a Misson village terrace? The frame is fine. The gearbox is tired. Fix the gearbox.
Where People Waste Money
The expensive mistake is calling a window company before calling a locksmith. A window company will quote a door, because that's what they sell. A locksmith will tell you what part has failed and whether it's worth replacing.
Second expensive mistake: fitting a cheap replacement cylinder. If you're spending £200 on a gearbox, spend £30 more and fit a proper anti-snap cylinder, Ultion or Avocet ABS (both TS007 3-star rated), rather than a £12 Yale blank. You're already on the door. The upgrade is almost free at that point.
Third: ignoring the hinges. A door that drops will wear a new gearbox out faster. Adjust the hinges when you're doing the repair. It takes twenty minutes and saves the gearbox lasting three years instead of seven.
